Faced with the ecological emergency linked to the buildup of plastic waste on Malagasy coasts, NGO Jade carried out, from May 29 to 31, 2025, an Ocean Initiative in Foulpointe (Mahavelona), in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation Europe. This action, part of an annual effort since 2009, aims to clean beaches and raise local communities' awareness of the environmental and health impacts of non-biodegradable waste. Close to 150 residents — fishermen, students, beach workers and municipal staff — took part in cleaning 400 meters of coastline, collecting mostly plastics (80% of the waste).
An interactive educational session, including a quiz and audiovisual materials on recycling, reinforced collective awareness, with participants demonstrating excellent grasp of the key messages. Funded by the German association Freunde Madagaskars e.V., this edition mobilized schools, the town hall and local associations. Buoyed by its success, the Foulpointe community is calling for the Ocean Initiative in Foulpointe to become a lasting fixture, while NGO Jade is considering extending its action to new coastal sites.
