Schooling 2012-2013

The NGO Jeunes Actifs pour le Développement (JADE) initiated a project to help with the schooling of disadvantaged children in the villages of Vatomandry, Ambodisaina and Ambodimanga. With the support of private German donors, the project was carried out in four stages: a preliminary survey among resource persons in each village, a study of the socio-economic and demographic data needed to identify the beneficiaries, the final selection of beneficiaries in consultation with the Mayor and the Director of the Public Primary School (EPP) according to certain criteria, and finally the implementation, realized through the payment of school fees and supplies for the school year in question.

The project aimed to help families in rural areas finance their children's schooling, to encourage children to persevere in their studies, and to act as role models for these children. The selected children were those of the required age for their level, willing to attend school regularly and approved by the teaching staff, the mayor and the parents. The project was carried out in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, with limited assistance granted to 11 children per village.

Ambodimanga II - October 06, 2012

Two members of the NGO JADE and two external collaborators traveled by bush taxi and private car to attend a distribution session at EPP Ambodimanga II. The distribution was carried out in the presence of representatives of the relevant EPP, the village's FRAM2 representative, the parents of the scholarship students and the students themselves. The school headmaster was absent because he had attended a training session that day outside the village. The Ambodimanga II fokontany is located in a region that is very difficult to access, 10 km west of the city of Fénérive-Est on the east coast of Madagascar.

Ambodisaina - October 13, 2012

Two members of the NGO JADE attended the ceremony for the handover of supplies and the payment of annual school fees in a classroom of EPP Ambodisaina, accompanied by an external collaborator, by taxi. The Headmistress of the EPP, a FRAM representative, the parents of the scholarship students and the students themselves were also present. Ambodisaina is a fokontany located in the suburban area of Toamasina II, less than 5 km from the city of Tamatave, with 3,285 inhabitants in 2009. The main sources of income are agriculture, the production and sale of charcoal and ravim-pontsy, with an average income of about 50,000 Ariary per month for an inhabitant.

Tsarasambo - October 13, 2012

3 members of the NGO JADE, accompanied by an external collaborator, traveled by car to hand over supplies and pay the annual school fees at EPP Tsarasambo. Representatives of EPP Ampaho, the parents of the scholarship students and the students themselves were present at the event, which took place in a classroom of the relevant EPP. The rural municipality of Tsarasambo is located 12 km south of Vatomandry, on the east coast of Madagascar. The fokontany has 1,982 inhabitants, who live mainly from fishing and agriculture, with an average monthly income of about 30,000 Ar per inhabitant in 2011.

The project's results show that 33 children benefited from schooling, with an equal distribution between the sexes (58% girls and 42% boys). The success rate of the students is 90%, and most of the children benefit from financial aid due to their parents' difficult situation. Funding for the project comes from the SorOptimisten Pirna Association (430 euros) and other private German donors. The total cost of the project is 1,406,865 Ariary, or 511.59 euros.
