Initiatives Océanes 2010 - Tamatave

The city of Tamatave took a big step towards a healthier environment thanks to the Initiatives Océanes initiative, which mobilized more than 200 young people to clean a stretch of beach from the nautical club to the mouth of the Pangalanes canal, on March 20, 2010. The results are impressive: 4,500 liters of waste were collected over a cleaned beach length of 1.5 km. The most common waste was plastic (95%), while glass, paper and metal represented only a small fraction. Three volunteer associations took part in this operation and intend to repeat the experience to renew the action later.

This first edition of the Initiatives Océanes in Madagascar was a success thanks to the associations A.S.Q, JADE and VOAAKALY, who set the example by cleaning the beach of Tamatave, the beaches of Libanona and Ankoba in Fort-Dauphin, as well as the river on the RN2 in Ambohimangakely. For them, being part of the I.O. adventure was a plus, as it gave them experience and recognition to better renew the action later. These associations deserve our respect and gave a real spark for every inhabitant of Tamatave to be responsible for their own hygiene habits, and for the whole city to follow suit, to make Tamatave a place one can be proud to live in.
