On Friday 5 June 2026, to mark World Environment Day, NGO JADE held the latest edition of its "Ocean Initiative", an annual gathering that has become a key event for the protection of Madagascar's coastline, on Ambila Lemaitso beach. The morning's programme included a beach clean-up, sorting of the collected waste, and awareness-raising among the local population on protecting the marine environment.
Beyond simple litter collection, the NGO JADE team used the event to share practical knowledge on waste sorting and recycling, aiming to durably encourage residents to stop dumping their waste on the shore or into the sea. This educational approach serves a dual purpose: keeping Ambila Lemaitso clean and welcoming for visitors, while protecting the marine biodiversity that makes this stretch of the Pangalanes Canal so valuable.
This mobilisation would not have been possible without the involvement of local partners: the Ambila Lemaitso public primary school (EPP), the Ambila Lemaitso Fishermen's Association, and numerous residents joined NGO JADE's active members to make Ocean Initiative 2026 a collective success. The same day, NGO JADE also took part in the World Environment Day 2026 carnival in Toamasina. Thank you to everyone who volunteered for a healthier blue environment!
